The essays were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay and published anonymously in newspapers under the pseudonym Publius. Of the three essays considered here No. 1 and No. 9 were written by Hamilton and No. 10 was composed by Madison. But the challenge devised by Hamilton in the first essay reflected the general conception of humanity, or mankind, in their terms, that was shared by the authors.
