Causes of Youth Suicide Suicide among the youth population is a problem which has been recognized all the way back to the Middle Ages and is one which has sparked a great deal of discussion among professionals in medicine, psychology, and psychiatry. Interest in youth suicide has increased considerably over the past 20 years, in keeping with a concurrent rise in the rate of suicide among youth. Researchers now place suicide as either the number one, two or three leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year-olds in the United States (Blumenthal, 1990; Hafen & Frandsen, 1986; Nelson, Farberow, & Litman, 1988). These numbers reflect a tripling of the rate of suicide since the 1950's (Blumenthal, 1990).
